Moxibution
[font=Tahoma]Moxibution is a therapy which treats and prevents diseases by means of moxa wool, the main material in the therapy inthe forms of moxa cones or sticks. The combustion of the moxa wool permits transmission of heat to points or certain locations of human body. With the heat, the points and meridians would be stimulated so that the purpose of warning the meridians and collaterals, invigorating the flow of Qi and blood, strengthening the body resistance and eliminating pathogens from the body is achieved. ①Direct Moxibustion3[uk!Ts:SF,O n
A moxa cone placed directly on the point and ignited is called direct moxibustion. It is subdivided into scarring moxibustion, and no scarring moxibustion, in the former, the local place is desired to be burnt, blistered and left with a scar when healed, and in the latter, moxibustion conducted on the points will not cause burning, blistering and scarring.
(1)Scarring Moxibustion (also known as "blistering moxibustion" ):,Dm(W9pR_
Prior to moxibustion, apply some garlic juice to the site in order to increase the adhesion and stimulation of the moxa cone to the skin, then put the moxa cone of the required size on the point and ignite it until it completely burns out, remove the ash. Repeat this procedure till all thcones burn out. Generally, for one session of treatment, five to seven cones are burnt. During the combustion when a patient feels painful ,the surrounding place of the moxibustion site can be gently tapped with hand so as to reduce pain. Normally, one week after the moxibustion, the treatment site would blister and post-moxibustion sore appears. Five to six weeks later, the sore heals and a scar forms when the crust falls away. This method is indicated for certain chronic diseases, such as asthma, the impairment of the lung due to overstrain and intractable pain. It is advisable that the post-moxibustion sore should be kept clean and avoid secondary infection./k;}4F4H+TDoF%h

(2)No Scarring Moxibustion:*P dT:G/us'LO;vk~(\
A moxa cone is placed on a point and ignited. When about two thirds of it is burnt or the patient feels a burning discomfort, remove the cone and place another one. Three to seventeen cones are continuously burnt to cause flush in the local site ,but no blister should be formed. This method is used widely, often for cold and deficient disorders such as asthma ,chronic diarrhea, indigestion etc

②Indirect Moxibustion (also know as moxibustion with material insulation )-w8M8y)t3Q$D6E
The ignited moxa cone does not contact on the skin directly, but is insulated from the skin by the materials of ginger, salt, garlic, and monkshood cake.{ka cjc

(1)Moxibustion with Ginger
Cut a slice of ginger about 2-3 cm wide and 0.2-0.3 cm thick, punch numer ous holes on it and place it on the point selected. On top of this piece of ginger, amoxa cone is placed and ignited.
When the patient feels scorching ,remove it and ignite another. Repeat this till all the cones burn and the skin becomes reddish. This method has the effects of warming the spleen and stomach and dispersing the cold. It is therefore indicated for symptoms caused by weakness and cold of spleen and stomach, such asabdominal pain, diarrhea, painful joints and other symptoms due to Yang deficiency
(2)Moxibustion with Garlic
Cut a slice of garlic some 0.2 to o.3 cm thick (a large single clove of garlic is desirable), punch holes on it, put it on the point with the ignited moxa cone above. Renew the cone when the patient feels scorching. This method has the effect of relieving swelling and pain, is often used for the early stage of skin ulcer with boils, scrofula ,etc.
(3)Moxibustion with Salt
This method is usually applied at the umbilicus. Fill the umbilicus with salt to the level of the skin, place a moxa coneon the top of the salt and then ignite it. When it burns out, renew another until all the cones have combusted. As this method has the action of restoring Yang from collapse and warming the spleen and stomach, it is effective for the symptoms of sweating, cold limbs and undetectable pulse resuited from acute vomiting and diarrhea, or flaccid type of wind stroke and postpartum fainting.

(1)Moxibustion with Moxa Stick`tR8IT3pe
Roll the moxa wool with a sheet of paper into a moxa stick, apply a burning moxa stick with a certain distance apart over the selected point. There are two kinds of method: mild-warm moxibustion and sparrow-pecking moxibustion.d3^QI9a8U

①Mild-Warm Moxibustion
Ignite a moxa stick at its one end and place it two to three centimeters away over the site to bring a mild warmth to the local place, but not burning, for some fifteen minutes until the skin becomes slightly red. It is suitable for all the syndromes indicated by moxibustion.+q&S
