Electro-Acupuncture

Electro-Acupuncture is an approach of preventing and treating diseases, in which electrical stimulator is connected to the points after the needling sensation is obtained, and the sensation would be enhanced via the pulsative current to the points.$G^+`;s%fUr"}

There are different types of electro-stimulator which vary in the mode of output, the pulsatory current is generated by an oscillator, the output voltage ranges from 40-80V, and the output current is less than 1 mA with the advantage of being safe and providing strong stimulation, it may be adopted to replace the hand manipulation.+DF:zd\i2QG%N

In general, 1 to 3 pair of points are selected from the same side of the body or limbs, puncture the point with the filiform needle after the needling sensation occurs and reinforcing or reducing needling manipulation is conducted, set the output potentionmeter of the stimulator to "0", connect the two wires of the output respectively to the handles of the two needles, switch on the power supply, select the desired wave pattern and frequency, gradually increase the output current until the patient gets a tolerable soreness and numbness sensation. The electro-stimulation may last 10-20 minutes. When used in the acupuncture analgesia, the stimulation may be longer. In case the stimulative sensation decreases, the current may be increased properly, or turn off the power supply for 1-2 minutes, then reswitch it on or adjust the output current to have a constant stimulative effect. When the treatment is over, turn the potential to "0" and switch off the stimulator, disconnect the wires from the needles and withdraw the needles. )a d~k5\c-O8k

The low frequency pulsation of the stimulator would stimulate the point via the inserted filiform needle so as to affect the physiological function of the body, relieve the muscular spasm and pain, induce sedation and promote the blood circulation. As the pulsation varies in frequency and wave pattern, the actions of the pulses may be different. The high frequency pulse 50-100/sec is known as dense wave, the low frequency pulse 2-5/sec termed as rarefaction wave.

OB^B9a |!V It may induce an inhibitory effect on the sensory nerve and motor nerve, commonly used for sedation and pain relief, relaxation of muscles and vessels spasm, acupuncture analgesia, etc.

It provides stronger stimulation to the points via the needles, thus causing contraction of muscle and the increment of the tension of muscles and ligaments. It induces a retarded inhibitory effect on the sensory and motor nerves. This kind of wave pattern is suitable for paralysis, injury of muscles, joints, ligaments, and muscular tendons, etc.5@u"zM-NYi
·Rarefaction-Dense Wave
,d$yN$[5L7U U It provides an alternation of rarefaction wave and dense wave, each wave lasting for one and a half second. This pattern has the advantage of avoiding sensory adaptation to the electro-stimulation which may occur in the treatment with single wave pattern, being good for the promotion of metabolism and the flow of Qi and blood, improving the nutrition of tissues and relieving the inflammatory edema. It is commonly used for pain, sprain and contusion, peripheral arthritis, disturbance of Qi and blood circulation, sciatica, facial paralysis, myasthenia, local frozen bite.

W$bX[v A regular intermittent rarefaction wave, it is an alternation of one and a half second stimulation in rarefaction wave and one and a half second on stimulation. This kind of wave may increase the excitability of muscular tissue and have a fine stimulative and contractive effect on the striated muscle. It is commonly used for muscular weakness and atrophy, paralysis, etc.(vnb"JoKD D
·Sawtooth Wave
AjG&T e,T+M It is a kind of fluctation wave in sawtooth form, the frequency ranging from 16-25/min which is close to human's respiration, therefore also known as respiratory wave. It is used for stimulating the phrenic nerve, (Tianding LI 17) artificial electric breathing and respiratory failure. It also has the actions of raising the excitability of nerves and muscles, regulating the meridians and collaterals, improving the flow of Qi and blood.

The electro-acupuncture is indicated for the diseases that can be treated by filiform needling, particularly for manic-depressive psychosis, neurasthenia, neuralgia, sequelae of cerebrovascular accident, sequelae of poliomyelitis, muscular flaccidity, gastrointestinal diseases, arthralgia syndrome, painful joints as well as acupuncture analgesia.R&ZV%L*]sv

① Prior to the treatment, inspect whether the output of the stimulator is normal,post to the treatment, turn all the buttons of the stimulator into"O", switch off the power supply and disconnect all the wires from the needles.
0W"X|:m rl3p1N3Y ② Electro-acupuncture generally provides strong stimulation to the points, prevention of fainting should be kept in mind. On setting the output of the stimulator, it is advisable to adjust it gradually, from small to large to avoid sudden and big increment ,which may cause strong muscular contraction and bending or breaking needles.M8Ga w)P
③ For patient with cardiac diseases,the electric stimulation is so connected that the current loop is not allowed to pass through the heart. When the electro-stimulation is supplied to the points nearby the medullary bulb and spinal cord, in order to avoid an accident, the output current should be smaller. Electro-acupuncture should be applied with great care in pregnancy.
Vo"Ra_\A\ ④ The handle of the filiform needle which has been used in the warming needle moxibustion,is not conductive as the surface is oxidized, and some needles with their handles coiled by non-conductive yellow oxidized alumina wire are not suggested to be used in electro-acupuncture ,in case such needles have to be used ,the connector of the stimulator should be connected to the body of the needie.'\5c|8s7c({ u
⑤ If  the output current is sometimes interrupted, it may be due to the poor contact of the connector, stop using it until it is checked and fixedI$k)D x7BbU;|m'T!d
