Brenda "BJ" Crabtree was lying perfectly still on a table one morning, looking like an exhibit from a carnival sideshow. Crabtree is one of several clients at Whole Body Health in Edwardsville who are eschewing cosmetic surgery for facial rejuvenation acupuncture, a painless, non-surgical procedure purported to reduce the signs of aging.

Traditional forms of treatment were working at a sluggish pace when one of Crabtree's friends referred her to Farook Muhiuddin (pronounced Mo-hoy-i-din), the chiropractor, hypnotherapist and acupuncturist who practices at Whole Body Health.

Muhiuddin said he places the needles at points where the body's vital energy --- also known in Chinese as qi (pronounced chee) --- is supposedly blocked. Muhiuddin leaves the needles in place for about 30 minutes, giving them ample time to set the qi free.
